A small journal of observation

Notes on light, the sky, and the quiet changes between seasons.

The long shadows of autumn

As the Sun moves lower in the sky, familiar places change character. A wall that looked flat in summer reveals its texture; a line of trees casts shadows far beyond the path.

For a simple observation, choose one place and return at the same hour for several weeks. Notice where the light falls, rather than trying to capture everything at once.

A few minutes after sunset

Sunset is not the end of the evening light. With the Sun just below the horizon, the sky remains a broad source of illumination. Colours soften and the contrast between foreground and sky becomes gentler.

Look away from the sunset, too. The opposite horizon often holds the quieter part of the scene.

An observing habit

Begin with the Moon

The Moon is an easy starting point for following the night sky. Its shape and position change noticeably from one evening to the next. A notebook, a date, and a rough sketch are enough to begin.
